Playbass is a Málaga DJ and production duo active since 2008. Rooted in Andalusia's enduring breakbeat culture, the project also maintains a parallel connection to drum & bass and ragga jungle, making its identity broader than a single tempo range or production format.
By the mid-2010s, Playbass was already part of Málaga's local club circuit. Playbass and Evil Crew appeared separately on the 2015 New Year's Eve breakbeat lineup at Sala Trinchera, alongside Speaker Reality, DJ Rasco, Cerbero and Boro Breaks. The bill captures the local network in which their later work together became established.
“Babaganoush,” made with Vazteria X for Xclubsive Recordings in 2016, is an early documented release. It placed the duo within a wider Spanish community of producers working with breakbeat's club and rave-derived language; later titles including “Wrap,” “Blood Oath,” “Sugar D” and “Mysterious Tides” show a catalogue extending beyond any one collaboration.
Evil Crew has become the defining recurring partner in Playbass's more recent releases. “City Funk,” released through Guachinche Records in 2025, was followed by a sustained sequence of joint productions including “Evil Eyes,” “She Knows,” “Progress,” “Gold Snow,” “Run The Show,” “Durga” and “Bump It.” Evil Crew is credited as a collaborator rather than as a member of the duo.
That run traces Playbass's movement through a constellation of independent breaks labels. Pata Negra Records released “Evil Eyes”; Break Beat Connection issued “She Knows” and “Progress”; Samay Records released “Gold Snow”; SPACE PIZZA Records handled “Run The Show,” “Durga” and “Mysterious Tides”; and Br8kn Records released “Bump It.” Other credits connect the project with Sound Perfect Breakz Records, Distorsion Records, Rough Division and Raveart Records.
The 2026 collaboration “Killa Baby,” with Sunsha and DataFunk for Distorsion Records, adds another strand to that network, while productions with Shade K and DataFunk demonstrate that the Playbass catalogue is not solely built around Evil Crew. Their contribution to the DIRTY KITCHEN RAVE compilation rave en una cocina sucia belongs to the same independent Spanish breaks context.
Beatport has placed this recent material in its Breaks / Breakbeat / UK Bass field, with releases such as “Run The Show,” “Evil Eyes” and “Gold Snow” sitting around the contemporary 130–135 BPM range. The duo's DJ practice reaches further: their recorded sets include a ragga-jungle and drum & bass mix for De Paneo, a 2016 Dirty Break live set in Córdoba with Speaker Reality, and the 2022 Dirty Break Guest Mix with Evil Crew.
Across productions, collaborations and mixes, Playbass connects Málaga's established breakbeat circuit with jungle-informed DJ selections and contemporary UK-bass-adjacent breaks. Their trajectory is defined by continuity within that southern Spanish scene, alongside an active release partnership with Evil Crew and a wider circle of local peers.
