K5 is the Orlando, Florida electronic project led by producer Kevin Shiver, better known as DJ KJ. It emerged from the mid-1990s Florida breaks continuum, but gave that scene a notably song-led form: piano figures, programmed breakbeats and featured vocals were central to its records rather than an occasional crossover device.
Before K5, Shiver had released material with Project 5 in 1990. His long residency at JJ Whispers in Orlando also placed him within a local network where club DJs, rave promoters and independent dance acts overlapped.
K5 operated as a live electronic group as well as a studio project. Mickey Bono is associated with the project as a co-producer, while Tammy Wright became its most recognisable vocal collaborator during its first run.
An early K5 piece titled "Piano Rock" developed into "Passion," the record that defines the project. Wright's vocal and the tune's piano-led melodic writing made it unusually direct without losing the syncopated rhythmic character of Florida breaks.
An early 1996 Kram Records 12-inch paired "Passion" with "Red Alert," "Frequency" and a club mix of "Frequency." Shiver was credited for writing, production and arrangements, establishing the compact set of vocal and instrumental material that shaped K5's identity.
Robbins Entertainment subsequently issued "Passion" in the United States, including Original and Euro mixes, alongside alternate versions of "Red Alert." The release moved K5 between breakbeat circulation and the broader American vocal-dance market rather than treating those audiences as separate worlds.
In 1997, Robbins released "Lift You Up" in Funky Mix and House Mix versions. The self-titled K5 album followed the same year, collecting "Passion," "Lift You Up," "Red Alert," "Funky Rhythm" and other vocal and instrumental cuts. Wright's presence gave the album a coherent vocal centre beside Shiver's rhythm tracks.
"Passion" travelled beyond its Florida setting through the 1997 Chasing Amy soundtrack, where it appeared alongside "Red Alert," and it reached the Billboard Hot 100. German releases and later European remixes extended its afterlife, with Three 'N One, KayCee and DJ I.C.O.N. among the producers to recast the song for continental dance floors.
Shiver returned to the K5 catalogue in the 2020s through new breakbeat versions. The 2023 "Passion (K5 VIP Remix)" was followed by a Brothers Of Funk vs. Analog Hustlers remix on ElectroBreakz, placing the song in dialogue with later generations of breaks producers.
That renewal continued with "Vader Bass," a 2025 collaboration with Huda Hudia for Kaleidoscope Music. In 2026, the label issued a sequence of "Passion" remixes by DJ Volume, DJ Richie Rich and Huda Hudia, Deejay Shaolin, On Deck, Gruv42, N!KITA, ANUSCHKA and DJ WAVS, and Devis Hard; DJ KJ also contributed his own "2026 VIP MIX."
K5's place in Florida breaks rests on the durable meeting of Orlando rave-era breakbeat and vocal dance songwriting. "Passion" remains its key document: a local breaks record that crossed into national and European dance circulation, then proved adaptable enough to be reworked by subsequent breaks scenes.
