Perpetual Present is the alias of British producer and DJ Neil Gray, active since 2005. Beatport describes the project as bass-driven psylectro breaks mixed with floor-focused techno funk — a hybrid identity that has remained consistent across more than twenty years of releases rather than a recent rebranding.
Neil Gray is explicitly credited on All Imaginary (2019): all music written, produced and mastered by Neil Gray. That closes any ambiguity around the name behind the alias and also points to a technical profile that extends beyond composition into mastering.
The catalogue stretches back well before the current Diesel Recordings run. Bandcamp archives material originally dated to No Long Term Plans, No Short Term Memory (2006), Perpetual Present Vol III and Monumental Amounts Of Nonsense (2007), The Singles (2008–2010), Shredded Wobble (2010), Off The Radar (2015) and All Imaginary (2019). Active: 2005–present is therefore literal, not approximate.
Label chapters are documented clearly enough to map a real timeline. Event bios summarise the arc as Acidphonic Records (2005–2011), Broken Records (2011–2015), VIM / Diablo Loco (2015–2018), Mecanoplastica (2018–2019) and Diesel Recordings (2019–present). That sequence gives structure to a career that might otherwise read as scattered across genres.
The Broken Records phase is anchored by the Ship-Wrecked EP (16 April 2012), with Ship-Wrecked, Autophobia and Razor Beam filed under Breaks / Breakbeat — a clean example of his mid-period breakbeat writing. Mecanoplastica followed with Cocaine Breakfast (2018, including a Mechanical Pressure remix); the relationship persists into 2026 with Delusions Of Grandeur (9 January 2026, 133 BPM, Breaks / Breakbeat / UK Bass).
All Imaginary remains the central long-form statement. The nine-track album (2019) spans Conscious Out Of Body Experience, One Photon, Guidance System, Falafel Surprise, Uncertainty Principle, Digital Tentacles, The Ridiculator, Inorganic Swamp Funk and Paradox Of Choice, conceived as a journey from futuristic techno through psychedelic intermediates to full-on drum & bass. Hofmann's Delight, listed on Apple Music and resurfacing on Bandcamp, is another album-scale release worth placing beside it.
Bandcamp tags across the catalogue — breaks, drum & bass, progressive, psybreaks, psylectro, psytrance, tech-funk, techno — explain why a single-genre label fits poorly. Perpetual Present is best read as a psychedelic electronic producer whose natural habitat crosses breakbeat, psybreaks, tech-funk, techno and drum & bass rather than staying inside one BPM bracket.
Diesel Recordings has been the main home since 2019 and the output there is prolific: Make Or Break, Get Buzzed, Nostalgic Romp with Aydose, Gas Slammer with Mr. No Hands, Vibe Check and Illusions with Cause & Effect, Grime Surprise with MrKittyBiskitz, The Fergatron and numerous remixes for label artists. Make Or Break (2025, 135 BPM) and Nostalgic Romp (December 2025, 132 BPM) sit in the recent catalogue alongside 2026 singles and remixes including Beatdown (Perpetual Present Remix), Jungle Techna (Perpetual Present & Cause & Effect Remix), Apocalyptic Break Dance (Perpetual Present Remix) and Moxy Lady (Sonale Remix) — Apple Music dates the latter to 19 June 2026.
Cause & Effect is the most visible collaboration of the Diesel years; Aydose appears on Nostalgic Romp and Mr. No Hands on Gas Slammer. Sonale's remix of Moxy Lady rounds out the recent network. Parallel to the breaks lane, Cautionary Tales Pt. 1 (April 2026, Deep Sea Frequencies / Psychedelic Jelly) delivers Magikool Aid and The Lattice as psydnb cuts with deep subs, leads and crisp drums — proof that the psychedelic side of the project is not historical residue.
As a DJ, Beatport lists him alongside the production credits, and live history includes Tribe of Frog at Lakota Club Bristol, Slackers Convention at Volks Brighton, Sunrise Festival and Nozstock Festival. Producer, DJ and remixer are all substantiated roles; mastering on All Imaginary adds a further studio dimension.
Within breakbeat culture, Perpetual Present belongs to the long-form British underground: a veteran alias with documented label eras, album projects that justify the psybreaks tag and a 2025–2026 Diesel run that keeps him firmly in the present tense rather than catalogue-only territory.
